This Saturday is the annual Animal Protective Foundation's Fireplug 500 Walk for Animals,
in Central Park in Schenectady;

and for the last few years we have been making raffle baskets for the event.  We are always so pleased with how the come out and how well they are received at the event.  Last year our baskets raised over $1.200.00.  I know that may not seem like a lot, but the tickets are only a dollar or 6 for $5.00; so it is a pretty good haul.  And when helping the homeless fur people, every little bit makes a difference.
This year we made 19 baskets, and I love each one of them.  This year we had a lot of help from some businesses in the community.  We received many wonderful gift cards/certificates to help boost the value of the baskets.
Always a favorite a book and tea lovers basket, this one with a local book store gift certificate; and I found a great cat tea pot and mug at Pier 1 Imports and a cozy fleece throw with dog bones.  Filled with teas, sweet treats, book/reading/tea accessories and three great hard cover books from J.D. Robb, Alexander McCall Smith and my favorite THE ARTISTIC CAT.
Also a basket themed around a gift certificate to the Crystal Lake Inn in Averil Park.
A similar basket was a huge hit last year.  I called it GRAB BAG-something to keep, something to share, something for everyone.  And since it was so popular I made it bigger and better this year.  Unlike the other baskets this has no contents list, it is a surprise for the winner.
Since this is a "dog-centric" event we made two dog baskets.  In the smaller one we included Issac Mizrahi dog waste bags and Juicy Crittour dog shampoo (I know right???) and a Louis Vuitton style waste bag holder.  The other has a items from Martha Stewart and the American Kennel Club.
We had some great APF gear to make a basket and for the men's Fendi cologne basket we used a "Mr. Handyman" theme and used the mustache craze to jazz it up.
Every basket gets a plush dog and cat, it is an event to help them after all, and we work very hard to find ribbon to match the theme of the basket.  But we start with purple curling ribbon, purple is the APF color and paw print curling ribbon from the Dollar Tree.  When ever we are in a Dollar Tree I always pick up a few rolls, it is perfect for the baskets.
A couple of Kid's baskets, a Clifford and a Snoopy, of course.
Another kids basket with a Pirate theme has been popular in the past, so we made one more.  And a Fuzzy Yellow Duckie Basket with the cutest duck rain coat and umbrella set.  And thanks to the Ellm's Family Farm in Balston Spa we decided to make another very popular Baking Basket.  This one with a S'mores Brownie and Carmel popcorn ball making kit.  We added a pumpkin and found a little barrel of hay at the Dollar Tree.  And another fan favorite, a movie night basket.  But we made it a sleep over theme with passes for Rolleramma in Rottedam.
Barbie Pet Vet Basket and the women's Fendi cologne basket with a fun "girlie" theme.
We made one more golf theme basket and my favorite basket to make (obviously) the Cat basket.
We found some wonderful things for kitty and a great boxed cat necklace and earring set.
And last, a wine basket with a bottle from the local Altamont Vineyards called Spider's Rose (Spider is a pup and on the label.)  And we found a flattened wine bottle with a cat theme label from Altamont Vineyards.
The weather for the event is expected to be perfect and we hope the baskets do well.  But most of all I hope those who win the baskets really enjoy them.
And here are just a few of the reasons we make these baskets.
