THIS MOMENT OF NATURE

Cruising on the Hudson River in Schuylerville in the area of Lock 5.  This is a great link to the history of Saratoga County.

Heading south on the Hudson.

Farm peeking thru the trees.

Getting buzzed by a helicopter flying oddly low.  We could feel the wind from the blades!

Heading north.  Buttress for old rail line.

Two beautiful American Bald Eagles.

Taking a break in the tree.

Jesse Billings Jr was a wealthy entrepreneur in Northumberland who operated several businesses including boat building and a bank. On June 4, 1878 his wife was shot dead through a window in his house and circumstantial evidence pointed to Jesse. The prosecution did not prove his guilt beyond doubt and he eventually went free. A book was written about the trial which was similar to the O J Simpson trial 120 years later. The book is called "To Spend Eternity Alone" by Dr. Hollis A. Palmer.

.In the fall of 1878, reporters from all the major newspapers in the country descended on Saratoga County for "the trial of the century." In what was to be the longest and most expensive criminal trial in the one hundred year history of the United States, the extremely wealthy Jesse Billings Jr. was tried for the murder of his wife [Eliza].

This is the bank Jesse built to house his money.

Odd that even on a leisurely cruise on the Hudson River there would be a murder site.  Hmm, maybe it's me?

An old paper mill, this area was home to many mills.

Part of the old lock.  This replica of the old Lock Caretaker's home was built by the students at Schuylerville High School.  Pretty cool.
